Bioenergy Retrofits for Europe’s Industry – Summary Paper for Policymakers published

BIOFIT (www.biofit-h2020.eu) is an EU project that aims to facilitate the introduction of bioenergy retrofitting in Europe’s industry. The consortium experts have now published a summary paper for policymakers.

Retrofitting is one of the fastest ways to increase Europe’s renewable energy share by making the energy production of existing industries more sustainable. Compared to completely new ‘greenfield’ installations, retrofitting has the advantage of lower capital costs, shorter lead times, faster implementation, less production time losses and lower risks.

Actions on retrofitting the energy industry are closely linked to the legal, institutional, and political frameworks at national and European level. This is also shown by the large discrepancies of the energy sectors in the different countries in Europe or overseas.

The present “Summary Paper for policy makers: retrofitting Europe’s industry with bioenergy” provides an overview on the challenges, barriers and technical solutions for the addressed sectors and gives recommendations for the policy makers.  Key observations are that (1) biomass availability and mobilization play an important role in all sectors and require due attention, (2) there are many new technological opportunities for bioenergy retrofitting, leading to a wide spectrum of, high-value products, higher efficiencies and lower cost, which justifies continued support for RD&D as well as dedicated policy development.
